Post-Byzantine Church of Agios Nikolaos
Moving a few meters from the Dragon Cave, the visitor can meet the Holy Church of Agios Nikolaos. It is a small church, whose construction dates back to Byzantine times. This picturesque church is part of the Monastery of Mavriotissa, which the visitor can meet by following the continuation of the lakeside road. There, next to the lake of Kastoria with the company of plane trees, stands this small church built on the rock of a cave.
The cave is said to have been a refuge for many during the Ottoman occupation as well as during the 2nd World War. It is believed that in those difficult times people were in need of hope and their religious faith prompted them to establish and maintain small, clandestine churches like this one.
